How GPA is Calculated in National Examinations Board (NEB)

A complete guide to understanding the grading system for SEE and Class 12 in Nepal.

The National Examinations Board (NEB) of Nepal uses a standard Letter Grading System for both Grade 10 (SEE) and Grade 12. Understanding this system is crucial for students planning their higher education.

The NEB Grading Scale (4.0 Scale)

NEB evaluates students based on a 4.0 GPA scale. Here represents the standard conversion used for both Class 10 and 12:

Marks Interval Grade Grade Point (GP) Remarks
90 - 100 A+ 4.0 Outstanding
80 - <90 A 3.6 Excellent
70 - <80 B+ 3.2 Very Good
60 - <70 B 2.8 Good
50 - <60 C+ 2.4 Satisfactory
40 - <50 C 2.0 Acceptable
35 - <40 D 1.6 Basic
Below 35 NG 0.0 Not Graded

How to Calculate Your Final GPA

Your final GPA is not just an average of your Grade Points. It is a weighted average based on Credit Hours. Subjects with higher credit hours (like Math or Science) impact your GPA more than subjects with lower credit hours.

GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hour) ÷ Σ (Total Credit Hours)

Step-by-Step Calculation:

  1. Identify the Grade Point (GP) for each subject based on your marks.
  2. Multiply the GP of each subject by its Credit Hour.
  3. Sum up all the values from Step 2 (Total Quality Points).
  4. Sum up all the Credit Hours of your subjects.
  5. Divide the Total Quality Points by Total Credit Hours.

Worked Example – SEE GPA Calculation

Let's calculate the SEE GPA for a student with these results (8 subjects, each 4 credit hours):

Subject Marks Grade GP Credits Quality Points
Nepali72B+3.2412.8
English65B2.8411.2
Mathematics82A3.6414.4
Science58C+2.449.6
Social Studies75B+3.2412.8
Opt. Math91A+4.0416.0
Computer88A3.6414.4
Health & PE69B2.8411.2

GPA = (12.8 + 11.2 + 14.4 + 9.6 + 12.8 + 16.0 + 14.4 + 11.2) / 32 = 102.4 / 32 = 3.20 (B+)

NEB Class 12 vs SEE Grading – Key Differences

While both SEE and Class 12 use the same NEB grading scale, there are important differences:

  • Theory Minimum Rule: In Class 12, if theory marks fall below 35% of the theory full marks, the student gets NG (0.0 GPA) in that subject – regardless of practical marks. SEE does not have this rule.
  • Practical/Internal Assessment: Class 12 subjects have separate practical/internal marks (typically 25% of full marks). These are combined with theory marks to determine the final grade.
  • Credit Hours: Class 12 subjects typically carry 4-5 credit hours, with some elective subjects carrying 3 credit hours.

NEB GPA Calculation – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum GPA to pass SEE in Nepal?

To pass the SEE (Secondary Education Examination) under NEB, a student must secure at least a Grade D (1.6 GPA) in each compulsory subject. If a student receives NG (Not Graded / 0.0) in any compulsory subject, they must retake that subject in the supplementary examination. The overall GPA is calculated as a weighted average across all subjects, considering credit hours assigned to each subject. Students aiming for Grade 12 admission typically need a minimum GPA of 2.0 (Grade C) or higher depending on the college and program.

How do credit hours work in NEB?

In the NEB system, each subject is assigned credit hours based on its teaching load. For SEE, most subjects carry 4-5 credit hours. For Class 12, subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics typically carry 5 credit hours, while English and Nepali carry 4. Optional subjects vary between 3-4 credit hours. The credit hours determine how much weight each subject carries in your GPA calculation – a subject with more credit hours has a bigger impact on your overall GPA.

Does NEB use relative or absolute grading?

NEB uses an absolute grading system for both SEE and Class 12. This means grade boundaries are fixed: 90-100% is always A+ (4.0), 80-89% is A (3.6), and so on. Unlike relative grading, your grade does not depend on how other students performed. This system ensures fairness and transparency in the evaluation process.

What is the theory minimum rule in NEB?

For NEB Class 12, if your theory marks fall below 35% of the total theory marks, you receive NG (Not Graded) with 0.0 grade point – regardless of your practical marks. For example, if the theory full marks is 75, you need at least 26.25 marks (rounded to 27) in theory alone. This prevents students from passing subject exams purely on practical marks.
