How GPA is Calculated in National Examinations Board (NEB)
A complete guide to understanding the grading system for SEE and Class 12 in Nepal.
The National Examinations Board (NEB) of Nepal uses a standard Letter Grading System for both Grade 10 (SEE) and Grade 12. Understanding this system is crucial for students planning their higher education.
The NEB Grading Scale (4.0 Scale)
NEB evaluates students based on a 4.0 GPA scale. Here represents the standard conversion used for both Class 10 and 12:
| Marks Interval | Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 - 100 | A+ | 4.0 | Outstanding |
| 80 - <90 | A | 3.6 | Excellent |
| 70 - <80 | B+ | 3.2 | Very Good |
| 60 - <70 | B | 2.8 | Good |
| 50 - <60 | C+ | 2.4 | Satisfactory |
| 40 - <50 | C | 2.0 | Acceptable |
| 35 - <40 | D | 1.6 | Basic |
| Below 35 | NG | 0.0 | Not Graded |
How to Calculate Your Final GPA
Your final GPA is not just an average of your Grade Points. It is a weighted average based on Credit Hours. Subjects with higher credit hours (like Math or Science) impact your GPA more than subjects with lower credit hours.
GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hour) ÷ Σ (Total Credit Hours)
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Identify the Grade Point (GP) for each subject based on your marks.
- Multiply the GP of each subject by its Credit Hour.
- Sum up all the values from Step 2 (Total Quality Points).
- Sum up all the Credit Hours of your subjects.
- Divide the Total Quality Points by Total Credit Hours.
Worked Example – SEE GPA Calculation
Let's calculate the SEE GPA for a student with these results (8 subjects, each 4 credit hours):
| Subject | Marks | Grade | GP | Credits | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nepali | 72 | B+ | 3.2 | 4 | 12.8 |
| English | 65 | B | 2.8 | 4 | 11.2 |
| Mathematics | 82 | A | 3.6 | 4 | 14.4 |
| Science | 58 | C+ | 2.4 | 4 | 9.6 |
| Social Studies | 75 | B+ | 3.2 | 4 | 12.8 |
| Opt. Math | 91 | A+ | 4.0 | 4 | 16.0 |
| Computer | 88 | A | 3.6 | 4 | 14.4 |
| Health & PE | 69 | B | 2.8 | 4 | 11.2 |
GPA = (12.8 + 11.2 + 14.4 + 9.6 + 12.8 + 16.0 + 14.4 + 11.2) / 32 = 102.4 / 32 = 3.20 (B+)
NEB Class 12 vs SEE Grading – Key Differences
While both SEE and Class 12 use the same NEB grading scale, there are important differences:
- Theory Minimum Rule: In Class 12, if theory marks fall below 35% of the theory full marks, the student gets NG (0.0 GPA) in that subject – regardless of practical marks. SEE does not have this rule.
- Practical/Internal Assessment: Class 12 subjects have separate practical/internal marks (typically 25% of full marks). These are combined with theory marks to determine the final grade.
- Credit Hours: Class 12 subjects typically carry 4-5 credit hours, with some elective subjects carrying 3 credit hours.
