How GPA Calculation Works in Nepal

📐 The GPA Formula

GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours)
1

Your marks (e.g., 78 out of 100 in Nepali) are converted to a grade using your board's grading scale.

2

Each grade has a grade point. For NEB, 78% = B+ = 3.3 points. For TU, 78% = B+ = 3.3 points.

3

Each subject has credit hours (weight). A 4-credit subject counts more than a 2-credit one.

4

Multiply each grade point by its credit hours, sum them up, and divide by total credits. That's your GPA!

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated in Nepal?
GPA in Nepal is calculated using a 4.0 scale. Each subject's marks are converted to a grade (A+ to NG) and a corresponding grade point. The GPA is the weighted average of grade points by credit hours: GPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours).
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to your average for a single semester or term. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average across all semesters of your program, giving your overall academic standing.
What happens if theory marks are below 35% in NEB?
Under the NEB system (SEE and Class 12), if your theory marks fall below 35% of the full theory marks, you receive an NG (Not Graded) with 0.0 grade point regardless of your practical marks. This means you need to retake that subject.
Which grading scale does TU use?
Tribhuvan University uses a 4.0-point letter grading system under its semester system (introduced 2074/75): A (90-100, 4.0), A- (80-89, 3.7), B+ (70-79, 3.3), B (60-69, 3.0), B- (55-59, 2.7), C+ (50-54, 2.3), C (45-49, 2.0), D (40-44, 1.7), F (below 40, 0.0).
How are divisions determined at Purbanchal University?
Purbanchal University determines divisions based on final CGPA: Distinction (3.6 or above), First Division (3.2 or above), Second Division (2.8 or above), Third Division (2.0 or above).
