Difference Between SGPA and CGPA in Nepal

SGPA simply tracks a semester, while CGPA defines your degree. Here's exactly how they differ.

If you fit into the semester system (like TU, KU, Pokhara, or Purbanchal University), you will encounter two main terms on your grade sheet: SGPA and CGPA. While they sound similar, they serve very different purposes.

1. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)

Definition: SGPA measures your academic performance for a single specific semester only.

  • It resets every semester.
  • It shows how well you performed in the last 6 months.
  • Formula: (Points earned in Semester) / (Credits in Semester)

2. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

Definition: CGPA measures your overall academic performance up to the current point of your degree.

  • It accumulates over time.
  • Your final degree division (First, Distinction) depends on this.
  • Formula: (Total Points earned in All Semesters) / (Total Credits in All Semesters)

Why CGPA Matters More?

While a bad SGPA in one semester might lower your morale, your CGPA is what employers and universities look at. One bad semester won't destroy your career if you improve in the next ones, as the CGPA balances it out.

How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA – Formula

CGPA is NOT a simple average of all your SGPAs. It is a credit-weighted average. Here is the formula:

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits Across All Semesters)

Worked Example

Suppose a TU BCA student has completed 4 semesters:

SemesterSGPACreditsQuality Points
1st Semester3.21857.6
2nd Semester3.52173.5
3rd Semester3.11855.8
4th Semester3.72177.7

CGPA = (57.6 + 73.5 + 55.8 + 77.7) / (18 + 21 + 18 + 21) = 264.6 / 78 = 3.39 (First Division)

How to Convert SGPA to CGPA

CGPA is calculated by taking the weighted average of all your SGPAs. The formula is: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester Credits) / Σ(Total Credits). For example, if your 1st semester SGPA is 3.5 with 18 credits, and 2nd semester SGPA is 3.8 with 21 credits, your CGPA = (3.5×18 + 3.8×21) / (18+21) = (63 + 79.8) / 39 = 3.66. Note that CGPA is NOT a simple average of SGPAs – it is weighted by the number of credits in each semester.

Can CGPA go up after a bad semester?

Yes, absolutely. Since CGPA is a cumulative weighted average, a bad semester does not permanently define your academic record. If you have 6 semesters of 3.5 CGPA and one bad semester of 2.5, your overall CGPA will still remain above 3.3. The key is to score higher in subsequent semesters to pull up your cumulative average. Many students recover from a weak first semester by performing better as they adapt to the university environment.

SGPA and CGPA at Different Nepal Universities

Different universities in Nepal use slightly different grading scales, but the SGPA/CGPA concept remains the same. Tribhuvan University uses A (4.0) to F (0.0) with 9 grade levels. Kathmandu University also uses a 4.0 scale but with different internal assessment weights (in-semester 40%, end-semester 60%). Pokhara University uses A+ (4.0) to F (0.0) with Dean's List recognition. Purbanchal University converts CGPA to a division system: Distinction (3.6+), First Division (3.2+), Second Division (2.8+).

Does SGPA appear on the final transcript?

Yes, both SGPA and CGPA appear on your transcript. Each semester's SGPA is listed alongside your subject-wise grades, while the final page shows your overall CGPA and the corresponding division (Distinction, First Division, etc.). Employers and graduate schools typically look at your final CGPA, but some scholarship programs may also consider individual semester performance (SGPA) to assess consistency.
