Difference Between SGPA and CGPA in Nepal

SGPA simply tracks a semester, while CGPA defines your degree. Here's exactly how they differ.

If you fit into the semester system (like TU, KU, Pokhara, or Purbanchal University), you will encounter two main terms on your grade sheet: SGPA and CGPA. While they sound similar, they serve very different purposes.

1. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)

Definition: SGPA measures your academic performance for a single specific semester only.

  • It resets every semester.
  • It shows how well you performed in the last 6 months.
  • Formula: (Points earned in Semester) / (Credits in Semester)

2. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

Definition: CGPA measures your overall academic performance up to the current point of your degree.

  • It accumulates over time.
  • Your final degree division (First, Distinction) depends on this.
  • Formula: (Total Points earned in All Semesters) / (Total Credits in All Semesters)

Why CGPA Matters More?

While a bad SGPA in one semester might lower your morale, your CGPA is what employers and universities look at. One bad semester won't destroy your career if you improve in the next ones, as the CGPA balances it out.
