Tribhuvan University (TU) Grading System Explained
A deep dive into how TU evaluates students in Semester and Annual systems.
Tribhuvan University (TU), the oldest and largest university in Nepal, has adopted the Semester-based grading system for most of its technical and management programs (like BCA, BBA, BIM, CSIT, etc.), while some programs like BBS follow an annual system.
TU Semester Grading Scale
The semester system uses a 4.0 scale. Here is the breakdown used by the Faculty of Management and Institute of Science & Technology:
| Letter Grade | CGPA Range | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | Distinction |
| A- | 3.70 - 3.99 | Very Good |
| B+ | 3.30 - 3.69 | First Division |
| B | 3.00 - 3.29 | Second Division |
| B- | 2.70 - 2.99 | Pass in Individual Subject |
| F | Below 2.70 | Fail |
How SGPA and CGPA are Calculated
- SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): Calculated at the end of each semester. It considers only the grades obtained in that specific semester.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): Calculated at the end of the degree. It is the weighted average of all SGPAs throughout the program (8 semesters for 4-year degrees).

Passing Criteria
For most semester programs, a minimum grade of B- (2.7 GPA) or C (2.0 GPA) depending on the specific faculty rules is required to pass a subject. Students failing to secure this grade must appear for a make-up examination.
