Overview of NEB Class 12 GPA
The National Examinations Board (NEB) evaluates Class 12 (+2) students across four faculties – Science, Management, Humanities, and Education – using a uniform 4.0-point grading scale. Each subject carries 4 credit hours. Your GPA is calculated as a weighted average of grade points across all subjects in your faculty. The GPA appears on your transcript and is used for university admission, scholarship applications, and further education abroad.
The calculation method is identical across faculties; only the subject list differs. Below is the official grading scale followed by faculty-wise subject breakdowns, a worked example, and links to dedicated calculators for each stream.
NEB Class 12 Grading Scale
| Grade | Marks (%) | Grade Point | Descriptor |

Worked Example – Class 12 Science
Consider a Science student with the following results:
| Subject | Marks (%) | Grade | Grade Point | Credit Hrs | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | 76 | B+ | 3.2 | 4 | 12.8 |
| Nepali | 82 | A | 3.6 | 4 | 14.4 |
| Physics | 65 | B | 2.8 | 4 | 11.2 |
| Chemistry | 71 | B+ | 3.2 | 4 | 12.8 |
| Biology (Optional) | 88 | A | 3.6 | 4 | 14.4 |
Total Quality Points: 12.8 + 14.4 + 11.2 + 12.8 + 14.4 = 65.6
Total Credit Hours: 20
The same calculation method applies to Management, Humanities, and Education – just substitute the relevant subjects and their grade points.
Important Notes
- Theory minimum rule: If your theory marks fall below 35% of the total theory marks in any subject, you receive NG (0.0) regardless of practical marks.
- Practical marks are combined: Your final percentage is theory + practical marks combined, and the grade is assigned on that combined score.
- Betterment/supplementary: Students who receive NG or want to improve a grade can sit for the supplementary exam. The GPA is recalculated with the new grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the grading scale the same for all faculties?
Yes. NEB uses an identical 4.0-point grading scale for Science, Management, Humanities, and Education. The marks-to-grade mapping (A+ = 90-100, A = 80-89, etc.) does not change between faculties.
How many subjects are counted in the GPA?
Science has 5 subjects, Management has 6, and Humanities and Education vary between 5 and 6 depending on the specific curriculum. All subjects listed on your NEB transcript count toward your GPA.
Can I convert my NEB GPA to a percentage?
NEB does not provide an official GPA-to-percentage conversion formula. However, a commonly used approximation is: Percentage = GPA × 25. So a 3.28 GPA corresponds to roughly 82%. Many universities and employers accept this conversion.
