TU MBS Semester GPA: Calculation Guide for MBA/MBS Students

Updated: April 2026 · 5 min read

What Is TU MBS?

The Master of Business Studies (MBS) is a two-year postgraduate program offered by Tribhuvan University's Faculty of Management. The program is divided into 4 semesters and covers advanced topics in finance, marketing, management, and organizational behavior. It is one of the most popular management master's programs in Nepal, alongside the MBA.

TU adopted the semester system for MBS in 2015 (2072 BS), replacing the old annual examination system. Under the semester system, each subject is assigned credit hours, and your performance is measured as a Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

TU Grading Scale

Tribhuvan University uses the following grading scale for all semester-based programs, including MBS:

GradeMarks RangeGrade PointRemarks
A90 – 1004.0Distinction
A−80 – 893.7Distinction
B+70 – 793.3First Division
B60 – 693.0First Division
B−55 – 592.7Second Division
C+50 – 542.3Second Division
C45 – 492.0Pass
D40 – 441.7Marginal Pass
FBelow 400.0Fail

This grading scale also applies to TU MBA, BBA, BBS (semester), and other programs under the Faculty of Management.

Typical MBS Subjects Per Semester

Each semester contains 4–5 subjects, totaling around 15 credit hours. Here is a representative breakdown:

SemesterTypical SubjectsCredits
1stManagerial Economics, Accounting for Decision Making, Organizational Behavior, Business Statistics, Business Communication15
2ndMarketing Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Research Methods, Operations Management15
3rdStrategic Management, Entrepreneurship, Elective I, Elective II, Seminar Paper15

Most core MBS subjects carry 3 credit hours each. Thesis/Project Work typically carries 6 credits in the final semester.

GPA Calculation Formula

Your semester GPA (SGPA) is a weighted average based on credit hours:

Semester GPA Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours

And your Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all semesters:

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Worked Example: 4-Semester CGPA Calculation

Let's walk through a complete MBS CGPA calculation for a student named Ramesh.

Semester 1 – SGPA Calculation

CGPA: 208.20 ÷ 60 = 3.47

Percentage: 3.47 × 25 = 86.75% – First Division

Notice how the CGPA is weighted. Even though two semesters were above 3.5, Ramesh's lower second semester (3.28) pulls the overall down slightly.

Minimum Pass Requirements

  • Per subject: You must score at least a D (40 marks, 1.7 GP) in each subject to pass.
  • Overall CGPA: A minimum CGPA of 2.0 is required to graduate from the MBS program.
  • Thesis defense: You must pass your thesis defense or project work in the 4th semester.
  • Back papers: If you fail a subject (F grade), you must retake it in the next available exam. The new grade replaces the old one in your GPA calculation.
